Sensory Room Design For Home Overview:

The Public Health Agency of Canada has published that 1 in 66 children are born with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In addition, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children. Both ASD and ADHD often are accompanied by a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). All of these things cause the brain to be unable to properly take in information from the senses and create an appropriate response. This is where a sensory room or sensory area comes into play, these spaces provide numerous amount of benefits which include; gaining access to appropriate sensory stimulation, enhancing learning, improving visual/auditory/tactile processing, providing a sense of safety/comfort, and helping self-regulate behaviour.

We work with families to create and further establish sensory rooms or sensory areas within the home. From gaining more knowledge to helping create the space, we can help to ensure you are equipped.

Service Outcomes:

  • Families will have the knowledge and space to ensure their child’s sensory needs are being met.

  • Children will gain access to appropriate sensory stimulation and their bodies learn how to respond appropriately to the stimulation.

  • A sensory room helps children improve their visual, auditory, and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills.

  • The time children spend in these spaces can help them to successfully complete routine tasks.

  • Understanding the various ways a sensory room can be leveraged to improve socialization, reduce stress, improve focus, and control emotion.
